In the last year the ability of Artificial Intelligence to create images has been completely overwhelming. But it's still not clear what yo can do with a tool that can make anything. Or rather a tool that can make something that almost seems like something else, but is always a bit wrong. For Moby Dick I set myself the goal of trying to find an intelligent way to use AI in a performance. In Melville's novel there are numerous chapters that read like long philosophical lectures based on whale facts . Following Melville we called these scenes "The Cetologies". Illustrating any one of these lectures with a few power point images would have been redundant and to illustrative. But with AI it was possible to create thousands of images, each one weird and wrong in intriguing ways. Where one image says, "This is what it looks like , a string of a thousand images is a drift through an obviously infinite space of possibilities. AI is a tool that doesn't work with images, the medium of AI is the complete image space itself.
